Are you starting your planning career and looking to gain hands-on experience in one of the UK’s most dynamic planning environments? The City of London Corporation is seeking a motivated Town Planning Assistant to support our Development Management Division.

The Role

As a Town Planning Assistant, you will play a vital role in assessing and managing routine planning applications. You will focus on small-scale proposals such as changes of use, advertisements, shop fronts and minor alterations. This is a great opportunity to build your planning expertise while working alongside experienced professionals on more complex developments.

You will also assist with planning enforcement and help ensure that all development within the City meets our high standards. This position offers real variety and a strong foundation for progression in the planning profession.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess and manage minor planning and listed building applications in accordance with legislation and local policy.
  • Assist senior Planning Officers with complex cases, including site visits and stakeholder consultation.
  • Support planning enforcement activity, investigating potential breaches and recommending next steps.
  • Undertake site visits to assess development impacts and prepare clear reports and recommendations.
  • Promote high-quality design and ensure proposals preserve the unique built environment of the City.
  • Respond to public and stakeholder enquiries, providing clear and accurate planning advice.
  • Contribute to improvements in team procedures and help maintain a high standard of service delivery.
  • Uphold health and safety standards during site work, including inspections in varied environments.
  • Work closely with colleagues across departments and maintain accurate planning data and records.

About You

We are looking for someone with a degree in planning, or a related degree supported by (or working toward) a postgraduate planning qualification recognised by the RTPI.

You will bring:

  • Experience in handling minor planning applications and writing reports with clear recommendations.
  • Knowledge of planning legislation and procedures for non-complex development proposals.
  • Strong IT skills and confidence working with databases and planning systems.
  • An understanding of planning enforcement and how to gather relevant site or public information.
  • Effective communication skills and the confidence to engage with developers, residents and colleagues.
  • Good organisational ability and a proactive attitude to managing your caseload.
  • A commitment to excellent customer service and team collaboration.
  • The physical ability to carry out site visits, including to roofs, basements and other restricted areas.

Why Join Us?

This role offers the chance to work at the heart of London’s historic and commercial core. You will gain invaluable experience in a high-profile local authority with a commitment to professional development and service excellence.
