The City of London Corporation is looking for a committed and resilient Street Environment Officer (Shift pattern) to help deliver a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable street environment in the Square Mile. This is more than a frontline role – it's an opportunity to contribute directly to improving quality of life for residents, businesses, and visitors in one of the world’s most unique urban environments.

 

About the Role

 

You will be part of a proactive enforcement and monitoring team, operating in a dynamic, public-facing role. Lone working is a key part of this position, as is covering night shifts and weekends as required by a structured rota (night shift work is essential and non-negotiable and will include weekends).

 

Key responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring the performance of waste collection, recycling, and cleansing contracts
  • All aspects of Enforcing environmental regulations and issuing Formal Notices and Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs), this will include face to face in person enforcement action.
  • Responding to out-of-hours public statutory nuisance complaints (e.g. noise, waste, illegal trading)
  • Promoting responsible waste management with businesses and residents
  • Carrying out inspections of public conveniences and reporting defects
  • Recording and reporting incidents using body-worn video and digital tools
  • Working with the police, housing teams, and other stakeholders on enforcement and partnership initiatives
 
What We’re Looking For
 

We’re looking for a reliable, confident, and public-service-driven individual who can work independently and stay calm under pressure.

 

Essential:

  • Experience in regulatory enforcement or street scene/environmental services
  • Strong interpersonal and conflict-resolution skills
  • Comfortable lone working (including night and weekend working) and dealing with challenging situations face-to-face
  • Good IT literacy and experience using reporting systems
  • Full UK Driving Licence

 

Desirable:

  • Class 2 HGV Licence
  • Keep Britain Tidy Enforcement Academy and Institute of Acoustics certification
  • Understanding of statutory frameworks relating to noise, litter, and waste management
