The City of London Corporation, representing the UK as a global financial centre, is establishing a permanent presence in the United States and seeking a dynamic, high caliber Managing Director, US, to lead this effort. This is a rare opportunity to help shape the future of the UK-US relationship in financial and professional services (FPS), a sector at the heart of global innovation, economic growth, and the transition to net zero. As the Corporation’s most senior representative in the US, you’ll play a central role in advancing cross-border regulatory, policy, and commercial engagement between the world’s two most connected financial markets.

Based in Washington, D.C., you’ll be responsible for delivering the City of London’s annual US business plan, building strategic relationships, and representing UK FPS interests at the highest levels. This includes driving initiatives such as the British American Financial Alliance (BAFA), positioning it as a go-to forum for US-UK FPS collaboration. You’ll work across regulation, trade, and promotion—enhancing market access, attracting investment into the UK (especially across the digital economy and sustainable finance), and supporting UK firms entering the US. Promoting the UK as an innovative, globally competitive FPS hub will be a core part of your mission.

This is a high-impact, outward-facing leadership role requiring a mix of policy insight, commercial instinct, and diplomatic skill. You’ll bring extensive senior-level experience from the FPS sector, a strong grasp of both US and UK regulatory environments, and credibility across business and government. You’ll be self-determined with a collaborative style and a desire to make an impact in public service. You’ll thrive in a fast-paced, outcomes-driven culture and bring clarity, agility, and purpose to your work. The role offers significant autonomy, but with strong backing from colleagues in London and globally.

Qualifications include:

  • Senior Leadership Experience: Proven track record in a high-level role within business, government, or a regulatory authority in the US, ideally with UK exposure. Experience driving growth, building reputation, and managing complex initiatives.
  • Deep Policy and Regulatory Knowledge: Strong understanding of the US financial services regulatory landscape and trade policy, with working knowledge of the UK FPS ecosystem and cross-border business models.
  • Commercial and Strategic Acumen: Demonstrated ability to develop and execute business plans, identify new opportunities, and deliver measurable impact across regulatory and commercial priorities.
  • Exceptional Relationship and Communication Skills: Influential and diplomatic communicator, capable of building trust with senior stakeholders across industry and government and representing the organization in high-profile forums.
  • Personal Attributes: Self-determined with high integrity, and a collaborative mindset. Adaptable and outcomes-driven, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, multi-stakeholder environment.
  • Additional Requirements: Strong written communication skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office tools, willingness to travel, and the right to work in the US.
  • Education: Educated to a degree or equivalent in a relevant subject, or possess an equivalent level of skills, knowledge and experience.

If you’re ready to help shape the UK’s voice in the world’s largest financial market and lead a first-of-its-kind platform for international engagement, this role offers the chance to make a lasting impact at the intersection of global finance, policy, and diplomacy.
