The City of London Corporation seeks to appoint an outstanding Head to lead City of London School.

Founded in 1442, City of London School is one of the UK’s leading independent day schools for boys aged 10 to 18. Situated on an iconic riverside campus in the heart of the City of London, the School educates just over 1,000 pupils. London is an extension of the classroom, giving pupils exceptional access to cultural, academic, civic and professional opportunities and helping to shape intellectually curious, outward-looking and socially aware young people.

Academic outcomes are consistently outstanding, and pupils progress to leading universities in the UK and internationally. The School is equally ambitious for life beyond the classroom. An extensive co-curricular programme enables pupils to develop a wide range of interests and talents, while excellent pastoral care supports them to flourish personally and academically. Kind. Aware. Ready. gives clear expression to the School’s values and to its commitment to preparing young people for a rapidly changing world. A transformational bursary programme, currently supporting around 100 pupils, reflects CLS’s longstanding commitment to widening access.

This appointment comes at an exciting moment for CLS and for its deepening partnership with City of London School for Girls and City Junior School. Each school retains its own distinctive identity, while pupils and staff benefit from growing academic, creative and co-curricular collaboration. The Joint Sixth Form Centre at 20 Aldermanbury, planned to open in September 2028, will create further opportunities for shared learning in the heart of the Square Mile. The next Head of CLS will work exceptionally closely with the Head of CLSG and will help shape the next phase of this ambitious partnership.

Reporting to the Board of Governors and the Town Clerk and Chief Executive, the Head will provide strategic and inspiring leadership, safeguarding the School’s character while guiding its continued development. As a Chief Officer of the City of London Corporation, the successful candidate will also contribute to the Corporation’s Executive Leadership Board. The role combines the leadership of a leading academic independent school with the opportunity to draw on the exceptional civic, cultural, educational and professional networks of the City.

The successful candidate will be an outstanding educationalist with a demonstrable record of senior leadership and the intellectual credibility to lead a highly academic school community. They will combine strategic vision with warmth, energy, sound judgement and high emotional intelligence. They will inspire talented colleagues, build trust across a wide range of stakeholders and place pupils’ learning, wellbeing and safety at the centre of every decision. Above all, they will be values-led and excited by the opportunity to lead one of the country’s most distinctive schools.
