Established in 1886 as 'a Collection of Art Treasures worthy of the capital city’, Guildhall Art Gallery houses the City Corporation’s permanent collections with works dating from 1568 to the present, including 17th-century portraits, Pre-Raphaelite masterpieces and a range of paintings documenting London's dramatic history. It hosts a number of small to large-scale temporary exhibitions and interventions year-on-year.

Beneath the gallery is London’s Roman Amphitheatre. Together, the gallery and amphitheatre deliver a significant and highly-regarded education and outreach programme and play an essential role in the City cultural and heritage offer.

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, friendly and well-organised person to the post of Curatorial & Collections Assistant.

This post will assist the Head of Gallery and Amphitheatre in the development, care, maintenance, preservation, documentation, display and interpretation of the City Corporation’s Permanent Collection of Works of Art on display and in storage.

The post holder will support the Head of Gallery and Amphitheatre with the provision of knowledge and expertise on the Gallery’s collection, and work closely with the Senior Conservator and Studio Manager with a hands-on focus on delivering a range of collections-based activities including the installation and deinstallation of exhibitions, loans, day to day collections care and assisting with collections project work.

A key aspect of the role is working alongside Facilities staff, Remembrancer, Surveyors and Security teams to ensure the Gallery remains safe and operational for visitors and collections, contributing specialist input on collection care matters where relevant (including collections housed in function spaces and other COL sites). The postholder will supervise contractors onsite in back of house areas.

Candidates will have relevant experience, preferably within a gallery or museum environment. You will have experience of working with collections. You will have good interpersonal, organisational, administrative and time management skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities to tight deadlines.

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act and as part of the selection process the successful applicant will be required to obtain a Basic Disclosure & Barring Service check.

Because our roles are so varied, we don’t have a ‘one size fits all’ policy for workplace attendance. How many days a week you’ll be required to attend your workplace will depend on the requirements of your role. It’s important that you understand the requirements before applying to ensure you are able to meet them. We are committed to considering requests to work flexibly and job share. Requests will be considered by the recruiting manager in line with our policies and business needs.

For more information on our categories for workplace attendance, please view our guide here.

We will be reviewing this policy and approach at regular intervals to ensure we’re meeting our attendance needs.
