General Maintenance Operative - plumbing
Fixed Term Contract until 31 May 2028
Help keep London’s historic markets running smoothly with your plumbing and maintenance skills.
We’re looking for a skilled and reliable General Maintenance Operative, with a strong focus on plumbing, to join our team at Billingsgate Market, E14. This is a hands-on, practical role where you’ll be helping to maintain essential services across our busy market sites.
About the Role
In this role, your main responsibility will be plumbing maintenance and installations – including tasks like fixing leaks, replacing taps or pipework, and carrying out regular water safety checks. You’ll also support with general repairs, such as painting, basic carpentry, and drainage work.
- Carry out plumbing repairs and installations (e.g. taps, sinks, water heaters, valves).
- Help prevent and control legionella by following water safety procedures and record-keeping.
- Support with general maintenance tasks such as painting, minor carpentry, and metalwork.
- Clear blockages in drains, toilets, and gutters.
- Respond quickly to emergencies like leaks, burst pipes or faulty equipment.
- Help with small building repairs, including concrete patching, fence and gate repairs.
- Keep accurate records of work completed and materials used.
- Follow all health and safety procedures and help maintain a safe working environment.
About you:
- Plumbing experience and a relevant qualification (or currently working towards one).
- Experience in general maintenance such as carpentry or painting is a bonus.
- Someone who takes pride in practical, hands-on work and enjoys problem-solving.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Willingness to learn and complete relevant training (e.g. forklift, IPAF, health and safety).
