The London Port Health Authority (LPHA) is integral to the work of the City of London Corporation. As one of the largest Port Health Authorities of its kind in the EU, we’re tasked with all port health matters including food and feed imports, infectious disease, and other public, animal and environmental health controls along 94 miles of the River Thames. Our work is essential to the wellbeing of London’s and the UK’s communities – and as Assistant Director, you’ll be at the heart of this.

Leading a high-performing team, we’ll look to you to lead, develop and manage the services of the LPHA. With a focus on the major ports of Tilbury and London Gateway, plus the Launch Service, you’ll see to it that our resources are being used as efficiently as possible, and you’ll ensure we’re meeting local, national and international priorities.

This is a great opportunity to tackle everything from implementing the relevant legislation and authorising enforcement actions, through to handling the knock-on effects of Brexit, so we’re looking for someone who brings an adaptable approach to every challenge. As a Chartered Environmental Health Practitioner or Official Veterinarian you’ll have experience in the regulatory sectors. If you have an understanding of Port Health and imported food controls that would be helpful, and you will enjoy building strong stakeholder relationships at every level.

In return, we can offer you a generous benefits package plus a fascinating career path.

Closing date: 12 noon on Monday 1 September 2025

Because our roles are so varied, we don’t have a ‘one size fits all’ policy for workplace attendance. How many days a week you’ll be required to attend your workplace will depend on the requirements of your role. It’s important that you understand the requirements before applying to ensure you are able to meet them. We are committed to considering requests to work flexibly and job share. Requests will be considered by the recruiting manager in line with our policies and business needs.

For more information on our categories for workplace attendance, please view our guide here.

We will be reviewing this policy and approach at regular intervals to ensure we’re meeting our attendance needs.
