Casual Welcome Host - Tower Bridge
About us
Tower Bridge is part of City Bridge Foundation, a 900-year-old historic charity of which the City of London Corporation is Trustee. City Bridge Foundation has remained vital to London over the years and today its primary purpose is to maintain and support five of London’s most iconic Thames bridges.
Over the past 30 years, the charity's vision has expanded to tackle social and economic divides across the capital. Today we still maintain our bridges, and since 1995 we have awarded over £840 million to charitable organisations working to tackle inequality and injustice across London.
Tower Bridge is one of the most famous landmarks in the world and an icon of London. The Towers, Walkways and Engine Rooms form a unique visitor attraction and draw up to a million visitors a year to see the views and explore the Bridge from the inside.
At Tower Bridge we are looking to engage a pool of Casual Welcome Hosts that can be called upon to supplement our team of permanent Welcome Hosts.
The Role
This rewarding role involves providing outstanding customer service to visitors from all over the world. We pride ourselves on the quality of our visitor experience and welcome, and we are looking for staff who can meet our standards and help us continue to improve.
Working as part of the Attraction Team, you will spend your time both inside and outside, engaging with visitors and the public. Duties will include welcoming and directing visitors though the attraction, answering basic questions about the history of the building and facilities and promoting retail and other commercial opportunities.
Tower Bridge is a popular public place, incorporating a major road, busy footpaths, and attracting large numbers of general bridge users in addition to visitors to the Attraction. Potential candidates should be aware that a wide range of different incidents can occur on the Bridge, including some which are potentially stressful or traumatic. While robust operational procedures and support measures are in place, applicants are advised to consider their own suitability to work in this environment.
As a visitor attraction, our busiest times are over the weekends, and we strongly encourage application from candidates with availability to work any of Friday, Saturday, Sunday or Monday.
The key purpose of the role is to ensure that every visitor has the best possible experience at every stage of their visit. Successful candidates are expected to be comfortable in proactively engaging with visitors, making short speeches and interacting with them to understand their needs.
You will need to be:
-
Enthusiastic and Engaging
-
Have clear spoken English (use of another language is beneficial but not essential)
-
Confident talking to the public, individually or in groups
-
Able to learn and communicate facts, figures and stories to a wide range of audiences
-
Used to working as part of a large team and in a busy environment
-
Comfortable to working outdoors in all weather conditions
-
Flexible and reliable
Training and uniform will be provided. Successful candidates will need to complete the new starter mandatory training scheduled inside a two-week period. This consists of a minimum of two full day shadowing shifts and a full day of training covering all aspects of the role.
We consider training to be a continuous process of learning and performing in the role. Selected candidates are therefore expected to consistently engage with this process.
While we do not require a minimum number of shifts to be worked per month, you are expected to attend Tower Bridge often enough that we are assured you remain trained and ready to work.
Payment will be £14.80 p/h, plus holiday pay, to make a total of £16.59 per hour worked.
We also pay a supplement of £4.15 per hour for work undertaken on Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays. This is in addition to basic pay and holiday pay to make a total of £20.74 per hour worked on these days.
Payment is made weekly in arrears.
Work will be offered according to demand and there is no obligation for us to offer and for you to accept work. As such there is no guarantee of regular work.
The selection of candidates will be based on the evidence given in the Personal Statement of the application form. It is therefore vital that you use this to explain your suitability in full by referring to the main tasks detailed in the Job Description.
NB – if you are asked to attend an interview you will be required to provide Photographic ID in the form of a legal government document – i.e. passport as proof of your right to work in the UK. Because our roles are so varied, we don’t have a ‘one size fits all’ policy for workplace attendance. How many days a week you’ll be required to attend your workplace will depend on the requirements of your role. It’s important that you understand the requirements before applying to ensure you are able to meet them. We are committed to considering requests to work flexibly and job share. Requests will be considered by the recruiting manager in line with our policies and business needs.
For more information on our categories for workplace attendance, please view our guide here.
We will be reviewing this policy and approach at regular intervals to ensure we’re meeting our attendance needs.
