About Us

Epping Forest was purchased by the City of London in 1878, to protect it from development. It stretches from London’s East End for 14 miles out into Essex and covers over 2,400 hectares with an additional 800 hectares of ‘complimentary land’, receiving over 10 million visits each year. Two thirds of the Forest are designated as SSSI and SAC, home to over 50,000 veteran trees, ancient pollards, over 100 ponds and lakes, two registered parks, ancient monuments, and listed buildings.

The Epping Forest Charity's purpose is to preserve the Forest in perpetuity, by the City of London Corporation as the Conservators of Epping Forest, for the recreation and enjoyment of the public. The charity has a team that numbers 100 staff, performing a wide variety of duties to maintain, enhance and protect this ancient, shared use landscape. The Forests' ancient wood pasture landscape is also managed with the help of a resident herd of 200 Longhorn cattle.

The role

We are recruiting two Nature Access Management Officers to support implementation of the Epping Forest Strategic Access Management and Maintenance Strategy (SAMMS). As part of the Business Development team and reporting to the Access and Development Manager, Successful candidates will help prepare and deliver a new Nature Access Management plan. This will include a collaborative programme of small projects; delivering community engagement, volunteering, events and practical nature positive initiatives.

Growing populations and increased visitor numbers bring both opportunities and challenges. The aim of the Nature Access Management team will be creating positive experiences for visitors while mitigating pressures on the Special Area of Conservation (SAC) through inclusive engagement, partnership working, and implementing targeted measures.

As part of our supportive team, you will:

  • Plan and deliver visitor engagement activity promoting nature‑positive behaviour.

  • Coordinate and deliver small projects and volunteer nature ambassador programme.

  • Support the preparation and implementation of a monitoring and evaluation framework.

  • Support our stakeholder group partnerships.

  • Prepare accessible and jargon free content for social media, publicity, and campaign materials.

Essential skills and experience:

  • Knowledge of UK nature conservation and environmental principles.

  • Experience in public engagement and stakeholder management.

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.

  • Excellent coordinator and partnership builder.

  • Creative thinker and problem solver.

  • Experience in monitoring and evaluating projects.

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act and as part of the selection process the successful applicant will be required to obtain a Basic Disclosure & Barring Service check.

The City of London Corporation is currently undergoing a programme to ensure that our pay and reward practices are competitive and equitable across the whole organisation, to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to thrive in the work that we do.

Because our roles are so varied, we don’t have a ‘one size fits all’ policy for workplace attendance. How many days a week you’ll be required to attend your workplace will depend on the requirements of your role. It’s important that you understand the requirements before applying to ensure you are able to meet them. We are committed to considering requests to work flexibly and job share. Requests will be considered by the recruiting manager in line with our policies and business needs.

For more information on our categories for workplace attendance, please view our guide here.

We will be reviewing this policy and approach at regular intervals to ensure we’re meeting our attendance needs.
